WD admits there is a firewire “technical limitation.”3
I have been using the WD Studio II 2TB on my 2008 iMac OSX 10.5.6 for two weeks. Connection: firewire 800. Today, it did not mount when I booted the computer.
Checked the WD Website Knowledge Base.

Discovered two things:

1. Knowledge Base Answer 1697: “This issue is caused by the external hard drive’s built in auto on/off functionality not correctly receiving a command from the computer system to wake from a power saver mode.”

Why does the auto on/off functionality not correctly receive the command from the computer system? WD goes on to suggest installing their WD Drive Manager.
Well, WD Drive Manager is already installed, how else could a user have arrived at this impasse to begin with?
And then they suggest to dismount the drive. How do you dismount an unmounted drive?

2. Knowledge Base Answer 1680: “This is an technical limitation between the FireWire interfaces on the Macintosh computer and the external hard drive.”

By “the external hard drive” WD means THEIR brand of external hard drive. I have never had this specific problem with any other brands of external hard drives connected to my Macintosh computer.
When is WD going to fix this “technical limitation” that they have built into their Studio II external hard drive? I would say, that is a pretty serious “technical limitation.”
1680 goes on to explain the workaround solution, essentially a routine disconnecting the power cable and reconnecting. Nice.

My hope is that this entire situation is the result of following the apparently misleading instructions shown in the Studio II manual: chapter 7, “Turning Off/Disconnecting the Device.”
Since “Auto-off” is the first entry in this chapter, it leads the user to believe that this is the preferred way to operate the drive. Guess not: as it turns out, the hidden “technical limitation” of the firewire connection will eventually cause the problem I have described. I suppose I can’t rely on “Auto-off.” Use “Safe Shutdown” only, even though the instructions in the manual differ from the instructions presented in WD Knowledge Base Answer 976!
And, speaking of conflicting instructions, compare WD Knowledge Base Answer 1386 with the Auto-off instructions in the manual.

Based on all of this information from WD, conflicting and otherwise, my guess is that the Auto-off feature is problematic (at least with Macintosh computers) because of firewire “technical limitations” caused by the WD external drive design. This fact, if it is a fact, should be expressed clearly in the manual.

high performance, 5 year warranty, self-rebuilding raid mirror4
If you want the best performance, you would want to use it as eSATA. This would mean a cardbus or expresscard eSATA adaptor on a laptop, for example. But here is the one star that I have taken off: at this price, it still does not come with an eSATA cable! It has cables for USB and the 1394, but no eSATA. I have not had the chance to test it in eSATA because of the cable. The USB2 speed is good enough for my archival application. I’ve also read around and eSATA is not faster than USB2 by much in real life (maybe 25MB/s vs 30MB/s).

The 5 year warranty is industry standard and is reassuring. And by the time it’s up, you will want a larger storage anyway. :P But you must keep in mind that that if the controller in the enclosure dies, your whole array dies. Hopefully the controller didn’t write bogus information into your harddrives and then hopefully WD will be able to ship you a new enclosure and you can recover that way. (This is the one weakness of having RAID 1 as the only copy. Be ware: a faulty controller can corrupt your data or even wipe your drives clean. Don’t let that be your only copy.)

Cost-wise, each of its 1TB harddrives retails at about 180 as of this writing and you still need two enclosures to mount them externally. That means you are paying 470 - 2*180 = 110 for WD’s own enclosure. It may still sound like a lot for an enclosure but the pros of this one outweight the cost and cons:

- The enclosure does RAID 1 (mirroring) in its hardware, no real cons here as long as 1TB+1TB mirroring is good enough for your application.

- Fanless: Less noise and it’s really silent, but it also runs rather warm even with air conditioning. I do note that there is a temperature sensor that will stop the drives when overheated. So there is technically no worry, unless the temperature sensor itself dies… And being fanless is what makes the 5yr warranty even better. I’ve replaced one too many fans in my enclosures. (Many fans die within 3 years…)

- Self-rebuilds: After replacing a drive, it will rebuild in several hours. Good: completely automatic. Bad: it does this offline so the data is not accessible while rebuilding.

- Green assembly: I should note that you can only use WD’s own “harddrive assembly” in this enclosure. You cannot (at least within the warranty’s limit) use your own harddrives, not even WD Green Series retail ones since they do not come with the assembly hardware. See the manual if in doubt.

In all, highly recommended if the capacity suits your need.

So far so good, except runs HOT3
I thought this drive would finally release me from my worry that my backups will melt away before my eyes. The Greenpower concept seems well and good but I don’t know about the long term viability of putting two of these drives in the same tiny enclosure with no active cooling.

After about 20 minutes of transfers I opened the lid and the drives burned my hand. I put a digital thermometer on the inside of the case between the hard drives and the air in there was 51C. The drives were probably between 60-70C as I can’t be sure. Compared to my internal WD Caviar 500GB drive that runs at 32C when cooled by the case-fan the the My Book worries me. Not that I will be running the drives for 2 hrs at a time all the time but it happens.

Otherwise, I tested the RAID 1 feature by removing a drive while the unit was powered and when I replaced it, the rebuilding process automatically began. If I unplugged it during the rebuilding, it would resume when I plugged it in again. Again after only 15-30 minutes of rebuilding the drives were too hot to touch again. I can’t imagine how hot the non-Greenpower drives get.

The power consumption ranges from 4W when off to 16W when rebuilding.

The interface is quite speedy as well. Roughly writing at 35MB/s using USB2.0.

I think I’m going to return the drive and build a NAS with two of the same drives inside for peace of mind.

Customer Reviews:

not bad3
The two-way mirrored screen protector looks cool, but in medium to high light situations you need to crank up the brightness on your ipod all the way to see it clearly.(shortening battery life) It also cuts down on video clarity a little and shows fingerprints badly. Still, fun to try for the price.

Limited Visibility1
This product may be acceptable to some people, but the visibility through the reflective screen cover is terrible. Not only does it cut down on the amount of light that can pass through, it also has a grid of very thin lines criss-crossing over the entire screen. For me this was very distracting and unappealing. I put the protector on for a day for kicks, just to show my friends how ridiculous it was. Then I promptly removed the protector and then bought a standard clear plastic one.

ITs OKAY3
its okay but got old after a week, i didnt like turning the brightness up and it has a really bad glare in the sun, but good product

Customer Reviews:

Same as the ones twice the price5
I’m pleased with it, it’s the best you’re going to get out of USB 2.0, and it works as well as the drives twice the cost. It looks the same as the $100+ drives too.

It requires either a second USB port, or an external adapter (not included) so factor that in. It’s not a criticism (it takes that much power to burn a DVD), it just may not be obvious beforehand. USB 1.x is acceptable for power, if you’re using it on a machine that has both types or have a spare “charging” hub. Not surprisingly, it does not play nice with my unpowered hub — it needs a full 500 mW to each port.

Great Little DVD-CD Player-Burner5
Ok, This is a great little CD-DVD player and burner. it does not required to install any CD it install by it self, true to the Plug and Play :D This DVD Player is able to play CD and DVD without any problems, You can view your DVD with free software like Windows Player or Real player, or with tons of freeware DVD players. It also can burn CD and DVD with free software like Windows, Itunes, Zune or any other free software. The Only bad thing is that this little monster will drain you laptop battery fast when burning a CD and DVD, it takes some power to do. Which its fine. Plus its really small and kinda hard so you can carry it with you.

portable DVR4
Bought it to go with my Acer Aspire One , works well, although the drawer opens slow and sometimes sticks.

Customer Reviews:

Excellent compact lightweight wireless cadence sensor5
Another handy piece of equipment from Garmin!

This kit comes in three basic parts; a sensor unit, which is about the size of a matchbox, and two magnets about the size of your pinky nail. Several zip-ties are included for mounting purposes; the entire kit weighs at most a couple of ounces.

Installation is pretty straightforward, but do follow the directions carefully and don’t snug down the zip-ties until you’re sure you’ve got all three components just where you want them and have tested the system!

The sensor mounts to the left chain stay with a pair of zip-ties. Garmin thoughtfully added a piece of rubber padding to the bottom of the sensor unit, so it won’t rough up your fancy carbon frame or your paint job :)

A single zip-tie attaches the crank magnet to the crank, although I had to use a large (3/4″) shim on my FSA crank (which has a curved profile and a hollow back) to place the crank magnet in the proper position for the sensor to “see” it. The spoke magnet clamp has both a round hole and a square hole; make sure you use the right hole for your spoke profile! I mounted mine on a spoke directly opposite the tire valve, just to help keep the wheel in balance.

The sensor unit must be positioned along the chain stay such that it can “see” both the crank magnet as it passes by the cadence sensor (the round part on the side of the sensor unit), and the spoke magnet as it passes the speed sensor (the part that looks like a lever in the picture).

Testing is accomplished by pressing a small button on the sensor unit, which prompts it to flash a red LED, then a green one to indicate that testing is started. As pointed out by another reviewer, the LEDs are hard to see in bright ambient light; I’d recommend testing in a garage if possible. Hi-intensity LEDs would have solved this problem, although I suspect these LEDs were chosen for their low power consumption, so maybe it’s a smart design decision after all.

Once the test button is pressed, the next 60 revolutions of the crank should cause the red LED to flash when the crank magnet passes the sensor, while the spoke magnet passing the sensor should generate a green LED flash. If you saw the red/green flash when the button was pressed, but don’t see a flash as each magnet passes the sensor, chances are one or both magnets are not properly aligned with the sensor (there are alignment lines on the sensor and both magnets), or the magnets are passing too far from the sensor (this is the problem I encountered and solved with a shim).

When you’re sure everything is in the right places, snug the zip-ties and cut them flush. Then set up a screen (typically the Biking screen) on your 305 to display Cadence in one of the data fields, and go ride!

Great product, confusing packaging if you have a Forerunner 3054
The handlebar mount and cadence and speed sensors went on quickly and worked flawlessly. However, when I first received the package in the mail, I was concerned I had ordered the wrong item. I have a Forerunner 305 wrist-mounted GPS, and all of the packaging for this product references the Edge GPS sensor, so I didn’t know whether or not this would even work with the Forerunner. There are very slight differences in navigating the menus to set up the cadence sensor between the Forerunner and the Edge, but the cadence sensor does indeed work very well with the Forerunner, so Forerunner owners order without fear!

Design could be improved3
The design could be improved upon as you need to have a magnet on both the crank arm and the spoke within 5mm of the sensor. This makes id difficult and may require some minor modifications on some bicycles (I needed to add a spacer between the crank arm and the magnet). Too much tilt towards the crank, risks having the arm of the sensor being caught in the spokes after a large bump on the trails or raod. I have known of other people being able to purchase a larger magnet to the inside of the pedal screw which allows the sensor to be farther appart. Other than that, it works great with the Edge.

Amazon.com Product Description
A good companion for Garmin’s Edge 305 and 305CAD cycle computers and the Garmin Forerunner 305 personal trainer, the GSC 10 monitors your cycling rhythm for up-to-the-minute results and later analysis. The self-calibrating, wireless unit measures both speed (in pedaling strokes per minute) and cadence , then provides feedback to the user for optimal performance. You can later feed the results to Garmin’s Training Center software, which helps you tailor your workouts to meet specific goals and objectives.

Like the Garmin heart rate monitor, the GSC 10 attaches easily to your bike, where its sensors detect signals from your wheels and send the information wirelessly to your personal trainer/cycle computer. It’s also backed by a one-year warranty.

1st time neophyte buyer of a Home Theater System5
I purchased this unit to complement a Samsung LN52a550 HDTV. Didn’t feel there was enough sound from the unit to complement the samsungs outstanding video. Shopped for reasonably priced HTIB units and decided (despite cautions that most didn’t perform) to give this unit a try. In my wildest expectations I never thought this unit would perform up to its marketing description. Placed in a den of that is approx. 15 x 25 and playing a Dolby DVD, it placed me in a cinema that provides sound effects that truly astounded. I’ll qualify this by saying that I’m a audio neophyte but for this sound at this amount of money I am truly impressed.

Be aware that this Sony unit is being used with a Samsung HDTV and consequently the transition between DVD usage & HDTV usage (must change input source) is a bit bothersome. I found that in order to obtain full surround sound from the unit when receiving audio only from you TV (not from the DVD) you must purchase a digital optical cable.

Hope I haven’t misled any one but if you select this unit I don’t believe you’ll be disappointed.

(UPDATE: If you own a wii. S-AIR will interfere with your wii remote.) - Finally found the One.4
(UPDATE:
I just found out that the S-AIR technology interferes with the wii remote. The cursor on the screen will jump all over the place and the sound on the wii remote will get cut out. It very noticeable playing Super Mario Galaxy when selecting your file on the file menu. So if you own a wii you will be very disappointed. Turning off the home theater or taking out the S-AIR cart on the back of the receiver solves the problem. Way to go Sony. I think you did this on purpose. NEW RATING: 4 STARS. Original rating was 5 stars.)

This Home theater system is great. The wireless system is nearly perfect, so far only a couple of weird click noises, but I have been using this 24/7 and it has worked beautifully. The design is really elegant for the price. Before getting this system I tried a Panasonic SC-PT660 5 DVD Home Theater System, the Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX587WC 5.1 Channel Theater System and the Sony HSS360 component system. And this system beats all of them by a mile. Highly Recommended.

Awesome5
Got this system a couple days ago, and it just blows me away. The sound is amazing, the sub really kicks out deep bass, its looks great and the picture is crystal clear also. The rear wireless has been flawless, microwave, cordles phone does not interfere with it at all. I have this system in a medium room and sounds wonderful. Has a 5 dvd/cd changer, am/fm tuner, ipod cradle included, input in front for headphones and mp3 player, hdmi, component, composite video out and coaxil and optical input also. The romote is not universal but works only for Sony Bravia lcd’s only. For the price, i recommend this unit to everyone.

Customer Reviews:

Not bad for the price3
This pack of goodies is pretty decent when you take into consideration the price you’re paying for all this stuff. The screen protectors (X2) are great. The silicone skins are pretty decent, but they are pretty much lint magnets. The neck strap is great if you’re a small-framed person. I’m a big guy (6′4″) and found the neck strap a little bothersome to put over my head, but it still works. The car charger adapter is good, but the AC adapter only outputs 500 mah which is half what your USB port outputs when you charge it straight out of the PC. This will be handy only when I don’t have access to a computer. The Y-cable may come in handy somewhere down the road, but I’m not sure when as I never share my player with anyone else. The video output cable was good. The earbuds are cheapies that you can pickup anywhere. The armband is just a basic armband which runs through the beltloop opening in the back of the silcone skin and is pretty much unremarkable. All in all, this wasn’t a bad purchase, but I’m not absolutely thrilled with it, either.

Good Stuff5
Its got everything you need and more. The skins are pretty good quality. The screen protectors work well but they do have air bubbles. The usb chord is useful. the ac adapter and car adapter work well too. Overall if you don’t want to pay those outrageous brand name prices for the same accessories. Its a no brainer. Buy and be happy.

Good deal4
I was looking for an armband for my Zune that wasn’t going to molest my wallet and stumbled onto this package. The three neoprene(?) cases are a nice shell to use in conjunction with the arm strap which is surprisingly comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t wear it all day but for runs and other workouts it isn’t cumbersome and didn’t need to be adjusted every two seconds.

The array of chargers is nice since Microsoft only supplies a proprietary USB cable when you buy a Zune so if you wanted to charge it without your computer, tough noogies. They feel a bit chintzy but get the job done which is all that matters I suppose. The headphone splitter is good if you want to watch something with a friend on a train ride or something. I don’t use the screen protectors because I bought the kit from Zagg that feel way better though I suppose they are passable.

The extra retractable transfer cable is nice to have around if you are like me and misplace your cables when you drag your laptop all over the house. Everything else, ie; ear buds, neck string and video cable have limited use. The video cable is short so if you don’t have front TV inputs it might be a little annoying to leave your player on top of the TV. To me, if you are near a TV then you are probably near your laptop which is probably your preferred medium for viewing anyway so it’s kind of a none issue but nice to have around anyway.

Overall it was a nice deal for the price and everything functions the way it should. A good alternative to the local offerings from the wallet predators.

Customer Reviews:

A great carrying case5
This is a well thought-out case for the droid. The clip on clamshell fits the phone perfectly, leaving all the ports and buttons available, though I suspect this would not be compatable with any of the docking accessories (I don’t have any). It will come off the phone fairly easily but I wouldn’t want to do this every day (and I suspect the locking tabs would wear or break too quickly). The only small comlplaint I have is that one of the locking tabs on the display part of the protector will press a couple of the keys as I open or close the display. I hope this will improve over time, but its not a big problem for me even if it continues.

The holster has a nice tight belt clip that holds the phone close to my body so that it is not sticking out to snag on things. The phone fits into the holster with the display inside so that everything except the ports on the phone are covered and protected. The display cannot accidently slide open while in the holster. So, on my belt I feel the phone is well protected against normal dings and the headphone port and volume control are easily accesible if I want to listen to music or talk on a headset.

I had the BodyGlove OEM case and returned it because it did not provide nearly the protection I wanted from a carrying case. This case is much better.

It is a good case but with one big flaw3
I bought this case from the Verizon store. The case is one of the best for the Droid. I dropped my Droid a few times already and I am happy that this case saved the phone. My biggest complaint is that the back opening for the speaker is more than half way obstructed! I don’t know why they did not make a full opening?? It makes using the case over speaker phone or listening to music harder because of this. I would give it 5 stars if they fix this. Now if you do not use speaker phone or don’t care about listening to music through the speaker directly, then you should not care. I also though about cutting out another opening to expose the speaker a little more but the plastic is very hard and I do not want to damage the case.

I also bought he Verizon car mount dock so I can mount my phone when I am driving. I had to take the dock back because the phone will not fit in it with the case on.

Hope this review helps

Droid OEM Holster2
A decent holster, it’s made solid and locks securely into the holster and I feel like the design would give nice protection to the phone. The clip feels very strong and I am comfortable with using it. The holster looks nice also and actually adds a bit of character to the phone.

The only thing I see that makes me wonder about the holster is that the top piece that surrounds the screen of the droid, hooks under the screen piece by way of 8 small hooks, when you slide the screen open to use the keyboard, the one hook touches the keyboard just enough to hit the c,d and e keys and I wonder if this will cause unneeded wear on the keyboard, and its a little annoying since the typing field always has c,d and e in it before you start.

Customer Reviews:

Excellent bag, more than roomy enough5
Bought this bag to carry my laptop and change of clothes for exercising after work. This product is just what the doctor ordered, it eats up everything that I throw into it and still has room for more. Well constructed and feels very sturdy. Lots of pockets and hiding spaces. Would recommend highly.

Its a big bag….4
So I needed a very large capacity backpack with a compartment to safely carry a 15 inch laptop, and I got it. Ample space, and its not cluttered up with file organizers, or zippered pouches, or any of that crap which you will almost never use which just ruins the space, so that was good. It doesn’t seem cheap, just thin and almost weak. I have it loaded down with 4 text books, all my school supplies, and a laptop, and it is holding up fine, I think it could have been made a little ’sturdier’ is all. I’m not disappointed at all though. Good bag if you need to carry a library on your back.

Customer Reviews:

Good price and for R800 or R18005
Under $11 is a good price for the Epson ink catridges and they work for the R800 or R1800, which I have, a great printer. The description doesn’t say for the R1800, but it is, says it right on the packaging. I’ve paid $13-$15 elsewhere when needed at last minute.

I seem to use more yellow cartridges than any of the others.

Ink is just expensive3
It’s how the printer companies really make their money. I cringe that it costs me $120 to replace all of my ink cartridges on my Epson R1800 and I never get as many prints as I think I should. A necessity for sure, there is no way around buying these things, I just wish they were a little cheaper. The quality of the inks are very good though and the prints I get from the R1800 are outstanding.

Genuine, and thus perfect5
I don’t think this ink requires any comments. Its genuine from Epson, period. It’s perfect for the Epson printer it’s designed for. I don’t have a problem using third-party inks on my cheap everyday printers. But for professional quality jobs on a pretty expensive (at least when we bought it a few years ago) Epson Photo R1800 — genuine ink is the only way to go.

Amazon.com Product Description
When your ink runs out, you want to be sure that your replacement ink cartridge is of the same high quality as the original. With Epson’s T054420, you can be assured that you are getting genuine Epson quality. Designed specifically for your R800 photo printer, this yellow ink cartridge yields approximately 400 pages at 5% coverage, and is water, fade, and smudge resistant so your prints look better and last longer. Epson estimates a lightfastness of over 100 years, you can rest assured that your prints will be around for generations.

Customer Reviews:

Stunning input device for HTPC’s5
Ever since I saw and used this device at CES I knew I had to have it.

Well, it just showed up today and while it’s not for touchtyping or long emails I am writing this review with it from the couch.

Most of the mini keyboards on the market are still quite large and have terrible ergonomics with some awful excuse for an integrated pointing device. The DiNovo Mini is different. The keyboard is small enough to keep with your remotes without anyone knowing you have an HTPC setup. I’m so tired of having a full size DiNovo Edge with a Gyration Remote Mouse taking up a ton of room. It’s great for typing a lot on but there’s no where to put it, and it’s awkward using a real mouse on the couch or always holding your hands in the air and flicking around to use the Gyration.

The DiNovo has excellent backlighting that only has one flaw. It makes it too hard to see the blue function keys like the ‘ and ” but you can see all the shifted keys easily. It turns on only the trackpad backlighting when using the mouse, probably to save power but you can light up the keyboard by tapping the large function or shift keys.

The buttons are all pretty small and the media (Play,Next, etc) are a little awkward compared to using them on a Harmony remote but it’s nice to have everything on one pad and not have to pick up a remote or a keyboard or a mouse to do everything.

You can alt tab, use windows keys, launch media center and 3 programmable buttons.. There’s even a CTRL+ALT+DEL FN key. Now that’s planning.

One other minor issue is there is no scroll wheel for internet use. it would be nice if holding FN while using the mouse did a scroll, but it just turns the mouse into a up and down, kind of like scroll but you have to hold FN the whole time or keep moving the function switch (for mouse or Dpad) back and forth all the time.

I won’t lie, it’s just like using a AT&T Tilt or other landscape slider smartphone keyboard. Cramped, pecking or using thumbs and writing this review has gotten to be a pain.

But for opening up your media center files, even full WMP11 or iTunes interface, browsing the web, sending short IM’s and emails, and most of what you do on an HTPC it’s great.

I will still keep the larger Edge connected for gaming, but the gyration is going in the closet.

I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to use an HTPC in the living room, or actually uses their PS3 as a browser. It is not for desktop PC’s at all, you will probably be better served with a much cheaper remote or something like the DiNovo Edge with it’s media pad.

The bluetooth range is decent but not like Gyration’s 100ft so it’s not really a professional presentation tool, but could be used at short (15-20) feet distances reliably. It really does make a nice powerpoint tool since you can draw on slides and have full mouse and keyboard control in presentations while standing up. Just be careful about the range.

Thanks and hope this helps :)

Nice keyboard but loses connection all the time and requires the battery to be removed2
It’s a nice keyboard when it works but it regularly loses the Bluetooth connection and you need to remove and replace the battery for it to work again. Very annoying and Logitech has no workaround for fixing it. Search the Logitech forums for “mini keyboard loses connection” to see the posts.

Until this problem is fixed, I would not recommend it. Logitech support has not been helpful with this besides saying it is a “known issue”.

The Mini Controller for the Youtube and Home Theatre generation …4

Pros:

1. Light sensing keypad is way-cool.

2. A very simple and easy set-up.

3. Keyboard is responsive and easy to use. Fat fingers wont mind it at all and it’s better than using your phone when you text.

4. The rechargeable battery seems to be operating fine and has the regular long life guarantee on it which is better than using a constant stream of disposable batteries.

5. Bluetooth Dongle storage is a plus.

6. A nice device that can and will eventually put all your fancy high-end remotes out to pasture.

7. Overall, a very nice product that delivers exactly what a person is looking for in this kind of product and ahead of the curve.

This is one of Logitech’s better hardware offerings as of late.

Cons:

1. Loses connection frequently causing a lot of frustration and aggravation.

2. Slow response time that makes you ask yourself: `Did it lose its connection again?”

3. Connectivity is bit dodgy, obviously as it’s now creeping up as the most reported problem from all the reviews.

4. The cover should flip back and out of the way, as it does get in the way and is annoying.

5. No scroll wheel — a feature which would’ve made this really nice.

6. Connectivity is only at about 15-20 feet, so forget trying to cross your large Home Theatre system like I did.

These con’s are all acceptable minuses for something this nice and this easy to use. I can’t see going without it now.
